What is germination? Germination is the process where growth starts after some period of dormancy. It is the first step in the production of a seedling. The seed contains an embryo and enough food for it to begin growing. The embryo is in a dry dormant state until conditions favor its growth. Things required for seeds to germinate... 1. Water...seeds are typically very dry and water is necessary for the seed start any kind of metabolism and begin developing into a plant. The seed will absorb water and swell. This causes the seed to crack. The water also activates enzymes that allow the stored starch in the seed to be to converted to sugar and used by the embryo to develop. 2. Oxygen...oxygen is required for the metabolism or converting of food into energy so the embryo can develop and grow. Once the seed cracks it needs oxygen available which it gets from the air. So seeds should not be submeged in water but only kept moist for best results. 3. Temperature and light requirements...the temperature for a seed to germinate depends on the type of seed. Some vegetable seeds will germinate in temperatures from the fifties to seventies while other types of seeds need much higher temperatures. And other types of seeds depend more on light than heat to start germinating.
