Earth science fair projects involve doing experiments in some aspect of earth science. Earth science is a general term refering to all the sciences related to our earth. These are some of the major categories of earth science:
Geology- The study of the makeup of the earth's crust. This includes rocks, soils, precious stones such as diamonds, metals such as gold, tin. copper, iron, etc. Also fuels such as natural gas, petroleum, coal, and uranium.
Geologists also study fossils of past plant and animal life to learn more about the earth's history.
Geophysics- The study of the earth's gravitational and magnetic fields. its mantle and core, and also seismic events such as earth quakes.
Oceanography- A study of the oceans of the planet. This is very important to all of us since over 70% of the earth's surface is covered by water.
Atmospheric Science- The study of the atmosphere that covers the earth. Meteorology, also known as weather science, is a part of that study.
Some Ideas For Earth Science Fair Projects
1. Calculate the circumfrence of the earth
2. Predict the weather based on the clouds you see the day before.
3. Does the moon rise at different times and places each day?
4. What types of soils hold water best?
5. Do an experiment to show the greenhouse effect using two pans of soil, thermometers, and a piece of clear plastic wrap.
