Bread Mold Science Fair Projects

Bread mold science fair projects are pretty popular among students. I think this is because they are simple to do and require very little supplies. You may have everything you need at home in fact to do several different experiments with bread mold.

Molds are a type of plant life called fungi. There are many different types of molds and several of these will grow on bread. Some of the common bread molds:

Rhizopus- This can be a gray to black whisker like mold. Rhizopus Stolonifer is a common black bread mold you may have seen.

Penicillium- A gray green type fungus that often has white edges.

Aspergillius- A fast growing and usually greenish blue colored but may also be a yellow to brown color. This mold never has the white border.

Fusarium- A fast growing and pale to brightly colored depending on the specific species. It can be brown, pink, red, or lilac colored.

Below is a photo I took of a slice of bread with mold. It appears to be either penicillium or aspergillius.

Unlike a lot of plants, molds can not produce energy from sunlight. Instead they rely on decomposing organic substances for their energy and nutrients. That organic material can be fruits and vegetables, plant materials such as leaves, plus many more including bread.

Molds produce spores which are microscopic size cells that can be spread very easily in the air. When these spores land on a surface and conditions are favorable they can grow and produce new mold colonies. Molds prefer warm and moist conditions along with organic matter to grow.

Before starting your bread mold science fair projects remember the three main factors that affect mold growth:

1.Temperature
2.Moist conditions
3.Organic source of nutrients
